Windows 10 to be like Windows 7

Get rid of the stupid first screen before log in. Who everĀ  thought that was cute … just another click in the world we don’t need.

NOTE: MICROSOFT FIXED THIS SO IT DOESN’T WORK ANYMORE. I’M LEAVING IT HERE FOR POSTERITY

  3. Look for the download arrow in the upper right of thepage
  4. Extract to desktop?
  5. Run Install
  6. Reboot to see effect or just continue on

Unpin the Microsoft store icon

  1. Right click the Store icon on the start bar (icon looks like a suitcase with black squares on the side)
  2. Select Unpin from task bar

Install a new start menu

  1. Download and install Classic Shell
  2. Accept default settings
  3. Right click the start menu
  4. Select settings
  5. Check Replace Start Button near the bottom
  6. Select the Classic button (I did)
  7. Click OK
  8. Click the start menu and see the changes

Choose a solid color with more options

  1. Open Paint
  2. Click on the Color 2 box
  3. Select the color you want, use Edit Colors for other selections
  4. Create a box
  5. Save the image, the default location is your pictures folder
  6. Click onĀ  the File tab
  7. Select Set as desktop background/Fill
  8. Your color will instantly fill the background
  9. Close Paint
  10. If you don’t like the color, just open your image and change the color (sorry, no details here on doing that)

Make File Explorer look like Windows Explorer

  1. Download and install 7-Zip
    1. Go to C:\Program Files\7-Zip
    2. Double click 7zFM (7z is a command line tool)
    3. Go to Menu/Tools/Options/
    4. In the Systems tab click on the right most + box
    5. That will set 7-zip as the default program to open most zipped files
  2. Download OldNewExplorer
  3. Open OldNewExplorer, 7-zip will open showing you the files
  4. Double click on OldNewWxplorerCfg.exe
  5. Approve the program to run
  6. The options window will appear
  7. Click on the install button to place the dll files into the system
  8. Allow the program to make changes (window may be hidden behind, mine was)
  9. Check Use classical drive grouping in This PC
  10. Check Use command bar instead of ribbon
  11. Check Show details pane on the bottom

Get rid of Cortina

In the update version of Windows 10 they try to stop you from turning off Cortana search. So now you have to change the setting in regedit.

  1. In search type regedit
  2. Find
    HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search
    (you might need to create this key if it doesn’t exist)
  3. Create the DWORD value AllowCortana and set it to 0.
  4. Type “cortana” in the search box
  5. Select Cortana & search settings
  6. Turn shit off.
  7. Start/PC Settings
  8. Select Privacy
  9. Turn shit off

Give the Window Bars Colors

  1. Right Click on the desktop and select Personalization.
  2. Select Colors in the left pane
  3. Toggle “Automatically pick an accent color from my background” to off
  4. Select a color. The dark blue in the second row will make it most like Windows 7-like shade.
  5. Exit Personalization.

Turn off notifications

  1. In the main menu select “PC Settings”
  2. Select “System Display, notifications, apps, power”
  3. Select “Notifications and actions”
  4. Turn off all notifications by moving the Show app notifications slider to the Off position.
  5. Exit PC Settings.
