About the Shelter Development Committee

The Shelter Development Committee (SDC) is working to create legal long-term campgrounds for people who are homeless. We believe that everyone deserves a legal place to sleep. The USA has decided that the cost of providing everyone with decent and affordable housing is beyond the means of taxpayers and developers. However, the cost of developing camping facilities is definitely affordable for local governmental and nonprofit agencies. To this end the SDC has worked since 1991 to create a political climate within the State of Oregon that is conducive to the development of affordable campgrounds.

UPDATE (9/2/05): The SDC has taken a break. Principle organizer, and former homeless drunk, John Statler has been elected to the Medford City Council and is working on creating a supportive political climate within the governmental structures.

The SDC also hosts Homeless Day in the Park, an annual event that provides at least one day during the year where people who are homeless are definitely welcome to hang out at the park. We provide live music, free food, free haircuts, free goodies for the kids and local service providers show up to explain their services and help people fill out the forms.

UPDATE (9/2/05): Homeless Day has not been celebrated for two years now. Organizers have become burned out after 9 years. However, a new group of people associated with Southern Oregon University are taking a serious interest so it may begin happening again next year!
